Gobseck (1830), fait partie des Scenes de la vie privee de La Comedie humaine. La scene debute dans le salon de Madame de Grandlieu, en conversation avec un ami de la famille, l'avoue Maitre Derville. L'avoue entend, pendant la conversation de Mme de Grandlieu avec sa fille Camille, que celle-ci est amoureuse du jeune Ernest de Restaud, fils d'Anastasie de Restaud, nee Goriot. Mme de Grandlieu desapprouve cet amour.

Nous sommes au Havre. Un negociant part refaire sa fortune dans les mers du Sud en laissant derriere lui la plus exquise des filles, Modeste Mignon. Modeste entretient une correspondance avec un ecrivain celebre, Canalis, poete elegiaque et carrieriste bigot, a travers lequel Balzac ne s'est pas gene pour decocher quelques traits a Lamartine et Vigny. Mais c'est le secretaire de Canalis, Ernest de la Briere, qui repond aux lettres et devient amoureux fou de Modeste. La supercherie est decouverte au moment ou le pere de la jeune fille revient des Indes, fortune faite et plus que faite. Alleche par la dot, Canalis se precipite au Havre, emmenant Ernest avec lui. Cela fait deux pretendants et il y en aura meme un troisieme : un duc, car Balzac a toujours un duc en reserve dans les manches de son froc. Lequel des trois va l'emporter?

Having returned to Paris and discovered that his wife has married an aristocrat who has liquidated all his assets, Chabert enlists the help of Derville to recover both his name and his fortune. Part of Balzac’s La Comedie humaine cycle, Colonel Chabert is a poignant tale about the pursuit of justice, as well as a portrait of France’s transition from the Napoleonic Empire to the Restoration. Rosalie s’est jure de les desunir. Albert Savarus est une histoire d’amour et de fureur, mais comme toujours chez Balzac, la passion s’inscrit dans le reel : le mariage bute sur la difference de classe et de fortune, les belles promesses ne resistent pas a l’epreuve du temps, le romantisme se fracasse sur la politique.
