Басня — одна из древнейших форм мышления и один из древнейших жанров искусства слова. Басенная традиция, насчитывающая многовековую историю, восходит к легендарному греческому мудрецу Эзопу. Его имя впервые упоминается в «Истории» Геродота (V в. до н. э.), откуда мы узнаем, что Эзоп жил в VI в. до нашей эры на Самосе и был рабом. Более поздние сведения о нем довольно различны и противоречивы. Изначально басни принадлежали устной традиции и были записаны гораздо позднее смерти Эзопа, до нас они дошли через ряд источников — греческих и латинских, многие сюжеты впоследствии были приписаны Эзопу. В настоящий сборник вошел полный свод (около 500) «эзоповских басен» в переводе и с комментариями выдающегося филолога-классика М. Л. Гаспарова. Само количество текстов, связанных преданием с именем Эзопа, говорит о необычайной популярности этих незамысловатых историй, заключающих в себе житейский опыт. Неслучайно басни Эзопа охотно использовали в своем творчестве многие поэты, в том числе Лафонтен, Лессинг, Крылов, создавшие лучшие образцы новоевропейской литературной басни.
